Final notes: common mistakes I still see
I manage procurement for a 25-person video production company. Six years, roughly $30,000 a year in lighting and grip purchases. I've ordered panels, strobes, flashes, and accessories—and I've made enough expensive mistakes to build a checklist.
If you're buying Godox gear for client-facing video or photo work, these are the seven points I run through first. It takes about twenty minutes, and it will save you from the purchases that look good in a cart and bad in a cost report.
1. Define the job before you open a product page
If you can't describe what the fixture is for in one sentence, don't buy it yet. That rule sounds too basic to matter, but nearly every bad purchase I've audited traces back to someone who bought "a versatile light" instead of buying a solution to a specific problem.
We classify every light before shopping:
- Key light: the main source on the subject
- Fill or background: lifts shadows or separates the subject from the set
- Practical: visible in the shot, part of the set design
- Effect: a beam, pattern, or colored accent
Write the sentence first, then look at products. A lot of budget buyers are currently checking out the Godox LEDP120C LED light panel, for example. The real question isn't whether that panel is "good." It's what you're pointing it at. For a seated interview, a compact panel is a solid key light. For a wide shot that needs a hard window pattern on the wall, it isn't the tool.
2. Check the color accuracy numbers
I check CRI and TLCI before I check wattage, price, or brand. CRI is the Color Rendering Index standardized by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE). TLCI is the Television Lighting Consistency Index developed by the European Broadcasting Union. For commercial work, I won't approve anything below CRI 90. For product shoots where the client's packaging or brand colors appear in frame, I want 95 or higher.
This wasn't always my policy. I only got strict about it after ignoring the specs once and eating the cost. We shot a product demo for a food brand whose packaging is a vivid red. On the client's monitor, the red looked orange. Nobody said "that light has low CRI." They said the footage didn't represent their brand. The reshoot cost us about $1,800. The light's CRI was 80, printed right there in the spec sheet I hadn't bothered to read.
The old belief that "accurate color means spending $2,000 on a fixture" comes from an era when budget gear genuinely rendered color poorly. That's outdated. Today, Godox sells panels and flashes with published CRI/TLCI ratings at very reasonable prices. There's no excuse for ordering blind.
Think of this as protecting your client's brand image. Pantone's color tolerance for brand-critical colors is Delta E below 2. A light with weak color rendering can push you past that tolerance, and the client will notice. They may not know why it looks wrong—they just know it does.
3. Total the full rig cost, not the unit price
It's tempting to compare unit prices. That approach works for office supplies, not for lighting. The fixture is usually half the story.
We compared quotes for two similar LED panels in Q2 2024. Panel A listed at $349. Panel B listed at $289. Panel B looked like the obvious choice—until I checked the details. It shipped bare: no yoke, no power supply, no bag. Those "optional" additions came to another $95 plus shipping. Panel A included everything. The $60 saving turned into a $44 loss before we'd even bought a softbox.
The most frustrating part of gear buying is that optional accessories are rarely optional. You'd think a light would ship with a way to mount it, but plenty of budget fixtures arrive with nothing. Then you're ordering a $40 bracket and waiting three days for it. When I audited our 2023 purchases, add-on hardware averaged almost 30% of the fixture price across the whole year.
In my cost-tracking spreadsheet, the fixture price is one line. Mounting, power, light control, and transport are separate lines. Fill those in before you compare two quotes.
4. Plan the power before you fall in love
AC-powered fixtures are simple. Battery-powered fixtures lock you into a battery ecosystem, and that's where the quiet costs live.
We standardized on V-mount batteries because our cameras already use them. When I evaluate a new light, the first question is: will it take the batteries I already own? If it needs a proprietary battery, the "affordable" light just became $120 more expensive. If it runs on NP-F batteries and I own zero NP-Fs, I'm starting a whole second ecosystem to maintain.
I still kick myself for buying two battery-powered lights with different proprietary batteries early in my career. They were decent lights. But keeping two battery systems charged, labeled, and replaced was a recurring cost I never budgeted for.
Checkpoint: Can this light run on power sources you already own, for the full duration of a typical shoot? If the answer requires a new charger, add that to the cost column before making a decision.
5. Ask whether the practicals will flicker—and whether LED strips can be cut to fit
This is the step most buyers skip, and it usually surfaces on set at the worst possible time. I'm talking about real-world lighting that appears in the frame: LED strips behind a desk, inside a retail display, or along a set wall. They're called practicals. They're part of the set, so they're part of how the client judges your production value.
So, can you cut an LED strip?
Yes, at the marked cut lines. Most 12V LED strips have cut marks every three LEDs; most 24V strips, every six. Cut on the marked copper line, not in the middle of a segment, or you'll break the circuit. After cutting, you can reconnect pieces by soldering or with clip-on connectors, and polarity matters: positive to positive, negative to negative. Every cut piece still needs to be connected back to the power source correctly.
The part people skip: flicker
Many affordable LED strips use low-frequency PWM dimming, which shows up as banding on camera. We learned this the expensive way. A background strip in an interview set looked perfectly fine to the eye and terrible in the footage. The fix meant replacing the strip's driver and reshooting the scene. That was an entirely avoidable cost.
If you're planning to put LED strips in front of a camera, test them at your actual shutter speed before you build the set. That test costs nothing. The reshoot costs a lot.
6. Don't force a panel to do a spotlight's job
For interviews and general product work, soft panel light is fine. The problems start when a shot calls for spotlight fixtures: hard-edged beams, obvious shadow shapes, or a pool of light hitting the wall like a window.
Spotlight fixtures have lenses that gather light into a controlled beam you can focus and shape. Add barn doors or a gobo, and you can project patterns or cut the light precisely. A panel throws a broad, soft wash. No amount of flags and diffusion will turn that wash into a crisp shaft of light.
We don't own many spotlights. They're expensive, and most jobs don't require them. When a client asks for that look, we rent. Renting a spotlight for $60 a day beats owning a $600 fixture that sits in storage for eleven months.
There's also a quality angle here: beam control reads as professionalism. A shot with intentional shadow and falloff looks designed. A flat, evenly lit frame looks like somebody just switched everything on. Clients respond to that difference even when they can't name it.
7. Check the ecosystem and read owner reviews
Before committing to any brand, look at what you already own. One of Godox's real strengths is that the same wireless trigger system carries across much of its lineup. Flashes, portable strobes, and LED lights can often be triggered and controlled from one transmitter. That's a genuine cost saving over time.
But verify compatibility. Don't assume every light works with the trigger you already have. Check the mount, check the wireless system, check the firmware requirements. I've ordered aftermarket adapters more than once because I assumed the mount was included.
And read what long-term owners say, not just launch-day reviewers. Example: before we bought the Godox Lux Cadet, I sat down and read a long-term Godox Lux Cadet review from a portrait photographer who had actually used it on client work. The consistent message from owners was clear: this is a retro-styled compact flash with a specific vintage look, not an all-purpose workhorse. That knowledge kept us from expecting too much. If you're choosing between a Godox LED panel and a flash, the same principle applies: read the reviews from people who own the product for the use case you care about, not the ones who unboxed it and shot their cat.
Final notes: common mistakes I still see
- Ordering before running steps 2–4. The sale price triggers the purchase even when the color rendering or real rig cost doesn't justify it.
- Ignoring storage and maintenance. Every fixture needs a case, occasional firmware updates, and clean connectors. That's time and money.
- Buying gear you'll use twice a year. Check whether a local rental house or equipment co-op has a membership tier worth joining. Ours has a lighting-access membership called the "Spotlight" tier: a monthly fee gives us discounted access to spotlight fixtures, strobes, and grip gear we'd otherwise have to buy. This year alone, that membership has saved us from several thousands of dollars in specialty purchases.
Twenty minutes with this checklist won't tell you which fixture is the most exciting. It'll tell you which one is the least expensive to own, and the safest choice for client work. That's the entire point.
