Wattage Is the Most Misleading Number in LED Lighting: A Quality Inspector's Take

I'm the person who checks lighting equipment before it reaches customers. New stock, demo kits, hire returns: roughly 250 to 300 items a year. In 2024, I've rejected about 7% of first deliveries because the box said one thing and the photometric test said another.

That experience has given me a firm opinion: wattage is the most misleading number in LED lighting. A 60W label doesn't tell you how bright a fixture will look on your subject. It tells you how much power it draws from the wall, and that's about it.

Wattage tells you how much electricity a light uses. It doesn't tell you how much usable light reaches your subject.

I'd rather spend 10 minutes explaining a spec sheet than sort out a purchase that doesn't match expectations. So every fixture that comes through our dock gets three checks: the photometric spec, the intended design, and the ratings on the label. Here's how those checks answer the questions I hear from customers every week.

What Changed My Mind About Wattage

It's tempting to think watts equal brightness. A 120W panel sounds brighter than a 60W COB light. Not necessarily. Driver quality, LED efficiency, and optics decide how much of that electricity becomes usable light.

The supplier batch in March 2023 changed how I think about wattage. We received a 150-unit batch of panels labeled 120W from a new vendor. On the light meter at one meter, they were about 20% dimmer than the 60W COB lights we already stocked. Same claimed color temperature. Same wattage claim. Less actual light where it mattered.

The vendor insisted they were within industry standard. We rejected the batch and had them redeliver at their cost. Now every purchase order we write includes a minimum lux-at-1m requirement and a tolerance clause. I should add that the panels weren't badly built; they were badly spec'd. That's a different problem, and it's the one that causes returns.

Use the Godox SL60W Lux at 1m Spec, Not the Wattage

Take the Godox SL60W. It's a compact 60W LED point source, recommended all the time for small studios and single-person video kits. The headline number is 60W. The more useful number is the Godox SL60W lux at 1m value on the official data sheet.

Lux at one meter tells you how much light actually lands on the subject at that distance. The data sheet I reviewed lists roughly 16,000 lux at 1m with the standard reflector. I'd verify the current revision before quoting it to a customer, but the point stands: that number tells you more than 60W when you're deciding if the light can work as a key source from two meters away.

Most buyers focus on wattage and completely miss beam angle. A lower lux reading isn't automatically bad: a wide panel spreads its light over a larger area, so it can look softer and more even on a face. A high lux reading can just mean a narrow reflector. So ask for the lux at the distance you plan to use, and ask what the beam looks like. Those two details are what wattage can't tell you.

In our own test procedure, we let each light warm up for 10 minutes before we read the meter, and we check color consistency across the dimming range. That kind of real-world verification matters more than the number in the ad.

The Godox TL30 Tube Light Isn't a Spotlight, and Spotlight Hire Needs the Right Fixture

The second check is the shape of the light. A fixture can meet its spec and still be wrong for the job.

The Godox TL30 tube light is a good example. It's an RGB tube with battery power and a wide, diffused output. It works well as an accent light: behind a desk, along a backdrop, inside a set piece, or as a practical in a scene. It is not a spotlight, and no amount of wattage will turn it into one.

A real spotlight of the type that shows up in most spotlight hire catalogs has focusing optics. It produces a tight pool of light, a shaped beam, or a throw that carries across a venue. A tube light spreads light in every direction. Comparing them by wattage makes no sense because they're built for different jobs.

If you're pricing spotlight hire for a one-off event, ask which fixture you're getting, how the beam is controlled, and what the rated lux is at the working distance. Two spotlights can draw the same wattage and one will throw twice as far because of lens and reflector design. That's why hire quotes should list measured beam data, not just a brand name.

A decent hire company should be able to answer from its maintenance records, not guess. We inspect every light before it leaves the dock and after it comes back. If output drops or the focus mechanism feels sloppy, it doesn't go out.

For streaming, the same confusion hides in the phrase stream spotlight. If you search for that, you'll find small effect spots and pinspots. For a talking-head stream, that's usually the wrong look. A soft key source keeps the face even, and a color accent light like the TL30 can add depth behind the talent. The right choice comes from understanding the shape of the light, not from chasing a bigger number.

Can You Put a Grow Light in a Regular Lamp?

The third check is ratings and safety. That's where the monthly question comes from: can you put a grow light in a regular lamp?

Usually not. The bulb may screw into the socket, but the lamp's label is the spec that matters. A regular lamp is often rated for a 40W or 60W bulb, and that rating assumes a certain amount of heat.

Many grow lights run hotter, have larger drivers in the base, and are designed for open fixtures where heat can escape. Put one in an enclosed or lightly wired lamp, and you're asking the socket, switch, and wiring to handle conditions they weren't rated for.

Check three things before you try it: the grow light's actual power draw, the maximum wattage printed on the lamp, and whether the bulb's instructions say open fixture only. If any of those don't line up, don't use it. We've had customers return lamps with melted sockets after exactly this setup. The bulb worked. The fixture didn't.

If you want grow lights for houseplants, buy a fixture designed and labeled for that purpose. That's not a premium upgrade. It's a safety decision.

Bottom Line: Buy the Measurement, Not the Marketing

I know this sounds like I'm asking everyone to become a spec nerd. That's partly the point. An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. They also create fewer mismatched expectations, which is why I treat customer education as a quality-control step, not a cost.

When you compare fixtures, ignore the bold wattage on the box for a moment. Ask for the lux at the distance you need, check the beam and the intended use, and respect the ratings label. The right Godox fixture for your setup might be an SL60W as a key light, a TL30 tube as an accent, something sourced through spotlight hire, or a small purpose-built lamp for streaming.

In my experience, reputable fixtures usually deliver close to their published numbers, and the Godox units we check are consistent. But an accurate spec is not the same as a suitable fixture. The brand name won't save you if the light is the wrong shape or the lamp isn't rated for the bulb. So don't buy the sticker. Buy the measurement that matches your job.
