I trust the vendor who shows every line item before I pay: compatibility, accessories, installation, commissioning, and what happens when something doesn’t fit. Pantone’s color matching guidelines use Delta E < 2 for brand-critical colors, with Delta E of 2–4 noticeable to trained observers. Photography and architectural lighting have a similar issue: if the color shifts from fixture to fixture, you pay for it in rework or client dissatisfaction. Not every project needs Delta E < 2. But you should know what you’re buying before you sign.
That said, I should note my experience is mostly with small commercial and event work. If you’re lighting a warehouse aisle, the calculation changes. The principle doesn’t: ask what’s not included.
My pre-approval checklist for any lighting order

- What’s NOT included? I’ve learned to ask “what’s not included” before “what’s the price.”
- What’s the return and rework policy if color, fit, or protocol compatibility is wrong?

Final word: transparency is the real discount
