Why 'Light Bulb vs LED' Is the Wrong Question

When people ask me whether they should use a light bulb vs LED for video, I don't say 'LED.' I say: neither, until you know what you're buying.

Most household LED bulbs are designed for one thing: illuminating a room efficiently. They are not designed to be a video spotlight. They flicker, they shift color when dimmed, and their color rendering is just adequate enough to not fail Energy Star requirements. Some are fine. But the risk is high — as of January 2025, if you buy a bulb with a CRI below 90, you're gambling with your footage.

Purpose-built video LEDs, on the other hand, are designed with a different goal: consistency. They use drivers that control flicker, and their advertised CRI/TLCI is something you can actually trust.
