The Problem: The Number on the Box Isn't the Whole Story

And another thing: LED tube lights do not fail the way tungsten lights do. A tungsten bulb goes dark suddenly. An LED tube dims slowly, drifts in color, and then the driver gives up. By the time you notice, the light has been causing problems for a while.

Also, most LED tubes are not designed to be serviced. When the driver goes, the whole sealed unit goes into recycling. That means the usable lifespan is decided by the weakest component, not by the LED itself.

The Real Cost of an Early Failure

I made the classic mistake in 2023. I bought a batch of cheaper tubes to save money on a series of small jobs. I knew I should ask for the LM-80 report. I thought, 'what are the odds? It's a tube light.' The odds caught up with me when one died during setup on a paid shoot.

Look for L70 and LM-80 data before you look at the price. If a manufacturer will not share it, walk away. And remember: L70 is not a failure point. It is a maintenance point. When the output drops to 70%, the tube still works. But if you pair it with a fresh tube, the color and intensity mismatch become a problem.

Warranty length matters too. A vendor that offers a two-year warranty is telling you something. A vendor that offers five years is telling you more. We don't buy tube lights without a clear warranty anymore.
