Mistakes I'd Rather You Skip
If you're setting up a small directional lighting kit for product photography, talking-head videos, or close-up detail shots, this checklist is for you. It's built around Godox gear, but the order of operations applies to almost any directional setup.
I'm a product photographer, and I've been handling studio lighting orders for seven years. In that time, I've personally made—and documented—six significant setup mistakes, totaling roughly $3,200 in wasted budget between reshoots, replacement parts, and one wrecked afternoon of electrical work. Now I'm the one who maintains the pre-shoot checklist for my team, so I've got a pretty good idea of where beginners trip.
These are the six steps I actually run, in order, on every directional Godox setup. No theory, no fluff—just the checklist I wish I'd had in 2018.
Step 1: Choose the Right Light for a Directional Job
When I say "directional," I mean a light with a defined edge and a narrow spread—like a theater spotlight or a beam through a window. That's the look. The Godox Diablo spotlight is my go-to when I need a punchy beam that lands on the subject and nowhere else. It does one job: it throws light in a controlled direction, with clean falloff and a visible edge.
That's what makes it a no-brainer for product shots. A big softbox spreads light everywhere and makes a product look flat. A spotlight carves it out of the background. If the goal is "make this look intentional and dramatic," you want a directional spotlight.
Before you buy anything, decide whether your scene needs hard, directional light or soft, diffused light. They are not interchangeable. If you're shooting a metallic object or a beverage bottle, spotlight all the way. If you're shooting a portrait, you'll probably want a diffuser involved—which is Step 2.
Step 2: Put a Diffuser on the Light Sources That Need It
A bare spotlight creates a hot spot that blows out highlights, especially on glossy surfaces. The fix is simple: put a diffuser in front of it. For speedlights, the Godox flash diffuser system—the magnetic modifier kit—snaps on and off in seconds, and the quality difference is way bigger than the price suggests.
You have two practical paths: a simple dome diffuser that slips over the flash head, or a small folding softbox. The dome is quicker; the softbox gives a flatter, more flattering quality. When you're starting, get the dome and learn to use it before you invest in the softbox.
One thing nobody told me: a diffuser eats light. A full-stop loss is normal. So every time you change or add a diffuser, re-check your exposure. On a 40-piece order, I attached a diffuser, forgot to adjust the camera, and re-shot the first six pieces. Two hours, gone.
I've probably cycled through five or six diffusers for our Godox speedlights. Maybe seven, I'd have to count. The point isn't the brand—it's that a diffuser is not a "set it and forget it" accessory.
Step 3: Position the Spotlight Like a Paintbrush
Directional lighting is a distance game. Move a spotlight closer and the light gets softer and more forgiving; move it further away and the shadows get harder and the falloff gets more dramatic. Before adjusting any settings, I set the light at a 45-degree angle to the subject, about three feet away, slightly above eye level. Then I take a test shot.
Then I move the light six inches and take another. You'd be surprised how much the character of the shadow changes in six inches. The shadows crawl across the product, and you can find the exact angle that flatters it. If you don't have a Diablo spotlight, any directional spotlight will do the same dance.
For most products, keep the light above the product's center line, pointing down at roughly 15–45 degrees. That mimics the way we expect light to come from above, so the shot reads as natural even when it's dramatic.
Here's something vendors won't tell you: the mood of directional light lives in the falloff, not the hotspot. So don't judge the look by the bright side—look at the shadow side. If the transition is ugly, the angle is wrong, not the power.
Step 4: Bring the Godox Lux Junior Retro in for Accents
If you have a Godox Lux Junior Retro, here's your excuse to use it. It's a lovely little retro flash, but it is not a key light. I treated it like one in my first year (2018), and the images came out underpowered, muddy, and sad. That was my first documented mistake.
Now I use the Lux Junior Retro for accents: a warm pop on the background, a subtle rim light on the shadow side, or a tiny fill that doesn't compete with the main spotlight. It's also my favorite way to add a "traditional flash look" to an otherwise modern product shot.
If you're adding an accent light, make sure you've already dialed in the main spotlight. Accents are the final brushstroke, not the base coat.
Step 5: Sort Out Power Before You Sort Out Shadows
Here's the step every lighting tutorial skips: power. The average home circuit handles 15 amps. A couple of LED lights can pull 2–5 amps each, depending on the model, and once you add a laptop and a charger, a solid setup can trip a breaker mid-shoot.
I learned this the hard way in September 2022. I had one circuit, too much gear, and a client waiting. The upside of solving it myself was saving maybe $200. The risk was burning my studio down. I calculated the worst case and decided it wouldn't happen to me. So I looked up how to wire an outlet from a light fixture, convinced I could fix it myself. Then I proceeded to prove the worst case, minus the fire. A screw touched the metal box, there was a spark, some smoke, and a $1,100 electrician bill.
I light the scene. I don't wire the building.
The moment I wanted to "fix" the electrical system, I had moved beyond my expertise. Good calls come from respecting that line. When I finally called an electrician, the first thing he said was, "I could've done this in twenty minutes if you'd called me Monday." He's a specialist who knows his lane. I know mine: lighting. He knows his: electrons.
It's not about "hire an electrician to be safe." It's about recognizing that a junction box has specific sizing, wire gauge, and load rules that vary by local code—and I don't have that knowledge. That fee is a lot cheaper than a fire, a fine, or a reshoot. (Should mention: we still met the deadline because the client's schedule slipped too. But I didn't know that when I was panicking.)
Here's what I do now, and what I'd put in your checklist: list every light and its max wattage, divide by your voltage (120V in North America) to get amps, and keep the total under 80% of the circuit rating. Two 200W LED lights, for example, draw about 3.3A. That's easy on a 15A circuit. Add a 1,000W halogen work light for the background and you're at 11.6A. Add a monitor and a charger, and you can smell the trouble. Keep a calculator next to the light kit.
To be fair, I can only speak to my own situation. If you're in a newer building with dedicated circuits, your setup might be fine on one outlet. But if you're running a bunch of lights and the breaker has already complained, that's a red flag. It's exactly the kind of problem an electrician solves in twenty minutes.
Step 6: Fire Ten Test Shots
The physical setup is done, but I don't trust it until I've exercised it. The day before a paid job, I set up the entire chain—spotlight, diffuser, Lux Junior Retro, wireless triggers, and the camera—and I fire it ten times. Not once. Ten.
Ten shots tell me the sync is solid, the battery won't die on frame three, and the diffuser won't fall off after the second tilt. We've caught 14 potential problems this way in the last 18 months, and the most recent was a Lux Junior Retro that stopped firing at higher sync speeds because the mode dial had been bumped.
Don't fire test shots with the lens cap on. Wait, that's just me. The point stands: test the full chain, not just the light.
This step costs ten minutes. The reshoot it prevents costs a full day.
Mistakes I'd Rather You Skip
- Using a directional spotlight as a fill light. It's a character light, not a filler. If the shadows are too dark, use a bounce or a diffused flash.
- Adding a diffuser and moving on without re-checking exposure. Every stop you soften is a stop you lose.
- Attempting electrical work that belongs to an electrician. If your research starts with "how to wire an outlet from a light fixture," stop. I have a $1,100 receipt that says the same thing.
- Buying a second spotlight before buying a proper diffuser for the first one. That extra light won't fix a hot spot; a diffuser will.
That's the whole checklist. If you're putting together a directional Godox kit, start at Step 1 and don't skip Step 5. The spotlight, the diffuser, and the Lux Junior Retro are the fun parts. The power plan is what keeps the fun from becoming a production delay.
